Above the Valley of Echoing Dogs

An aeroplane cuts through the sky
Like the blade of a lazy chef,

Tractors groan in the distance,
Wasps buzz out warnings,
Flies spin like dazed rain,

Seconds before burning
I’m golden.

In a grove above the valley
I hear the echoes of dogs
And the din of a hundred crows,

I look and try to find
The pillars and squares in nature,
A grey amidst the greens,

And then uncover nothing.

Rabbits scuttle,
Hedgerows twitch,

The world catches scratches,
A thousand leaves rustle,

And I’m golden again.
