Seasons Reverse

It’s so damp in here
My skin won’t stick
To any thought I breathe,

Out through
My ever shrinking window
The songbirds are dwindling
And the guttural crow of magpies
Is taking the estate by storm,

They trot and hop
With camp menace
Across their territory,
Prophetic chests puffed up,
Ruling the roost as they
Lift the silver slug trails
And oust the golden sky.

Here where life
Is too quickly stolen
And the days start
With silence
And end in a scream,

I soak up the rain
And watch thieves
On shallow afternoons,
An eye on their angular motions
As they bend through
The nooks and the crannies,

I catch a glimpse
Of the sun as it falls
And feel a swell of great pity
As seasons reverse
To the sounds of a storm
And sink in the sorrow
It sheds.
