Dear Leader

If your freedom
Is walking round
Broken glass parks
As the dark spits it’s venom
All over your brow,

How is it
Your visits
Are met with dog barks?

And why is it
Your wow is a factor

The tears followed laughter,
The memories of seeing you snaffle
Walnut whips by the fire
In the green comfy chair,

A sneaky spoonful of brandy butter
Minutes after declaring your shock
That you’d put on weight again somehow,

Stories of ballerina horses,
Gravy browning Zulus
And Ian Rush’s love
Of your steak and ale pie,

The black and white photos
Of you holding me
When I was a baby,
My tiny mouth smiling
And gurgling joy,

Your embroidery
And lilac coat hangers,

Your huge warm cuddles
And the comforting scent of talc,

The TV on full blast,
The Emmerdale theme tune,

The soft glow of your eyes
Lost in a novel,

A love that now sleeps
Deep in the clouds.

The gnarled redneck gent
All pot yellowed fingertips
Flapping the wind wild

Is gone.
