So Sudden They Bite

It’s happening again,
Their tongues are scaled
And they’re laying eggs,

There’s a gentle hiss
And a creeping mist
This hand shadowed night,

Some are still thinking
It’s invisible theatre,
A nothing
In the drunken
A dust cloud,
A clutch of falling leaves.

Spines ridged
With microphone wires,
Nails filed
For the cameras,

Hidden in corners,
A vicious glint
In their eyes,

They’re here,

And still the strollers ignore
All the signs,

Some are immune
To the flashing lights now,
To the day glow grinning
And headlines,

Something evil
Is snarling,
And still the lame folk
Sit yawning,

Soon they’ll be selling
Their children
To zoos.

Longing Left Us

The soft wet leaves lisped
Longing left us like storm clouds
And the grass sank smiles

Human Prunes

They groaned
Like their lives
Depended on it,

Human prunes
With tubes
And blues

As deep
As oceans,

Motion sensors
All flat batteries
And flickering lights.

Uptight with reason,
All lesions
And foes,

Split grow-bags
And loose

Blistered and fraught,

Warts and all
And cut short.

They stared at walls
And pictured

All we did
Was chatter.

Terrible Vultures

Posted in Poetry with tags , , , , , , , , , , on June 4, 2011 by dc

Take it as given
They will never ever
Thank you in a crowded room,
Scrape your name from their claws,
Credit you on printed materials
Or smile as they fly away.

Consequence is their mistress.

I call them
Terrible vultures,
As they angle themselves
In the morning,
Devouring their cornflakes,
Beaks bullet pointed.

Trepidation greets their silence.

They spend hours on branches
Just shimmering slightly,

They never flap without reason,
Teeter or squawk,

They feast on the needless.

So, take their money,
Sleep soundly
And panic no more,

Avoid open spaces,
Lock all windows
And doors.
