Gone Giddy Blink

Hypnotised by the hustle,
At sea down swaying streets,
Awash with heavy perfume
And hormone thickened air,

The world sets its crease,
Sets its crease in the fold
That flickers under rain clouds,

Sets standards yet unmatched,
Patched denim kerbs
And car horns,

A bricolage of movement,
A shimmering zoetrope,

A fruit bowl filled with peaches,

A gone giddy blink
At dusk.

Tea Total

I grew
A cannabis plant
Once,

But I gave it
To my
Rabbit.

This Way Out

Where sits
The skeletal tease,

The peach-tissued skin
Of the wallflower,

The dead eyes
Of a new lamb at dawn?

She’ll tell you
There’s only one way
To catch a summer fly,
Two hands falling
In speed and desire.

A voice as cold
As a soothsayers
Frozen truths,

A swollen tear
Reflecting dissected
Confusion,

The songbird,
The winter,
The icy lake
Glinting,

A forest sat scarred.

Who carved
The eagle
Into the tree,
The fox,
The wolf?

Why not
Just let it be?

I’m lost
And so is she,

This celebration’s
Over.

Every Dawn

Often when wrong
I float slow across oceans
Broken like driftwood
My skin sodden by storms,
Face aghast every dawn.

Silver Birch

The silver birch tree
All alabaster shimmers
And dark swollen joints

Funeral Cameo

Surrounded by grief
The sound of a huge furnace
Roars through the silence

Them

It had its lifespan,
Greater than
A picnic daydream,
Less than
A prison sentence
For burglary.

Their hearts raced happy,
Longer than
A package holiday,
Shorter than
A career
In retail.

Their families never met,
They never owned a pet,
Went water-skiing
Or dabbled in role-play.

They just held hands
And wandered,

The streets
A scenic backdrop,

Months of giddy chatter,
Hidden dreams
And cushions scattered,

Songs on benches,
In gardens naked,
Endless drinks
And sex at dawn.

They kept their eyes open,

Swam in well thumbed oceans
All fiction and clichéd nutrition,

Made dozens of bad decisions,
Aborted missions,

No more wishing,

Future tracks
Just snapped
Then fizzled,

Lost in a riddle,

The middle
Of gone.
