Their Name Was Calico Dawn

A campfire barely burning
Built on someone else’s dreams,

A house out in the country
Devoid of energy,

The grief of something not quite right
Buried in a shallow grave,

Manufactured solitude
And the shunned hip-hip-hooray.

In-between the loops of rising suns
And a thousand well-thumbed maps,

Disasters sprang from stolen books
And the sounds of the railroad tracks,

Their thoughts spent resurrections,
All whispered jamborees,

And inside their battered jewellery box
They collected autumn leaves.

The New Goodbye

Chords of discontentment,
Inconsequential mayhem
And the sweet scented sweat
Of memories reborn.

It was the last night,
The new goodbye,
We improvised badly on stage,
Spat questions and stumbled
Like strangers adored
Drowning sadness,

Old friends laughed
In the corner,
The dead hummed
Their approval
And the city sank
Knee deep
In storm water.

The last note rang loud,
Like a new full stop,
It grew with the wind
And rumbled the beams,
Stealing our breath
And approving our dreams

One by one.

And The Band Were Called Free Spirit

Eyes aglow
With crack house
Fantasies,

Alabaster skinned
With a fortunate
Haircut,

We’ve seen
All these moves
Before,

The curled lip,
The awkward
Indie flamingo pose,

And now we know

Another
Broken
Sapling,

Piss wet
And splintered,

Has forgotten
The tree
Within.
