An enormous black dog
Reincarnated as

An old typewriter
With too many keys,

Ink wounding the paper
When fingers attack,

Tired stories snarling,
Restless like trembling dust

Drifting on the edge
Of consciousness,

Straying past its borders
and into the deep wild of the backcountry,

Gripped by insomnia
And feral doubt,

Tuned to the calls
Of the dirt dusk ravens,

A taste in the air
Dry as bone.

It’s all wrong.

Through The Coffee Shop Window

The last sentence you thought
Rains heavily,

A dark cloud swells and envelops
The conversations in your mind;

A shooting star is not enough,
The glittering sky is a waste,

Even the full moon’s glow is lost
In tumbling words,

No shape or real reason
Just a cascade of breathing,

Teething children dribbling sounds
And the gush of gutters

Beating down.

All around you there is chatter
A swell of matter interacting,

Attracting sparks,
Laughing and cackling,

It’s the last thing that you need.

Second Draft

Cars on fire,
A battle for power,

The shivers of time,

And hindsight,

Human nature rotating,

The cantankerous cackle
And the rattling pockets
Of the men who made good
As streets burned
And sons died.

The bloodiest day
Of a fictional war,

With a twist,

Lost heroes
And the gossip of gunfire,

The clatter of half truths
Cracking and snapping
The playwright’s
Drawn mind,

And the rippling gripe
That the things he hates most
Are the most true and humbling,

A history crumbling,

And he’s never been paid
To just lie.
